What is it about?

Because patients with encephalomyeloradiculoneuropathy (EMRN) exhibit autoantibody against neutral glycolipids, especially lactosylceramide in sera and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), we examined lipidomic analyses on sphingolipids present in CSF. The data clearly showed species-specific ceramide accumulation as well as statistical significant upregulation of active C5 complement fragment in sera and possibly in CSF. These data strongly suggest that EMRN is neuroinflammatory and neuroimmunologiical disorder. Furthermore, the present manuscript implicate the possible therapeutic strategy employing anti-complement medicine for the treatment of this sometimes devastating neurological disorder.

Why is it important?

Some species-specific ceramide is highly related to the occurrence of whole nervous system involving neuroimmunological disoder which results in the whole nervous system neuroinflammation. Moreover, anti-neutral glycolipids, especially anti-lactosylceramide autoantibody exhibit the strong correlation with its titer and clinical conditions of each case. These data strongly suggest that EMRN is one of the autoimmune disorders in nervous system.
