What is it about?

This tag consists of a T-matched dipole antenna with tapered meandered arms whose ends are folded to one side and a commercially available RFID chip connected to the terminals of the antenna. The tapered meandered structure increases the electrical length and hence reduces the physical size of the antenna with broadband characteristics. The resonant frequency of the tag can be tuned easily by adjusting the gap width between the folded arms, so that maximum read range is achieved in the desired UHF RFID band of the required territory and hence the performance of the tag is enhanced. This miniaturized novel tag has a dimension of 26.4 x 24 x1.6 mm3 with a read range of 2.8 meter at 915MHz, which corresponds to North American UHF RFID band.

Why is it important?

since the tag is small and have appreciable read range, it finds many use in jewelry and similar applications
