What is it about?
Lutein is a kind of carotenoid which possesses a wide variety of biological activities such as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. However, it is unclear whether lutein could inhibit neuroinflammation in microglia cells. In this study, we investigated that lutein could efficiently attenuate neuroinflammation in BV-2 microglia. The protective effects of lutein against neuroinflammation were based on its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities.

Why is it important?
Microglia are the resident immune surveillance cells of the central nervous system. Aberrantly activated microglial cells could induce neuroinflammation and lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease. Therefore, suppressing the aberrant activation of microglia may have valuable therapeutic potential for the treatment of neuroinflammation related neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we investigated that lutein could efficiently attenuate neuroinflammation in BV-2 microglia, suggesting that lutein has great potential as a nutritional preventive strategy in inflammation-related neurodegenerative disorders.
