What is it about?
The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of two laser wavelengths for stimulating acupuncture points in a postoperative acute pain model using Wistar rats. 45 rats underwent a 1 cm incision on their right hind paw to evaluate mechanical hyperalgesia. They were randomly assigned to receive treatments on their left hind paw with either a Green Laser (GL, 532nm), a Red Laser (RL, 660nm), or a Laser Off (LO). Treatments were applied immediately after surgery and repeated after 1, 3, 6, and 24 hours. Pain sensitivity was measured using a Von Frey device. Levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, Substance P, and CGRP in the incision tissue were determined by ELISA.

Why is it important?
The green laser proved to be more effective in relieving postoperative pain and modulating certain inflammatory markers compared to the red laser. These results suggest that the green laser may also be a good option for treating acute postoperative pain using acupuncture points.
Perspectives
Better spread the use of low power laser in acupuncture, experimenting with other wavelengths such as green.
