What is it about?
This article summarizes a PhD thesis on three discourse markers, namely buoys, PALM-UP and the sign SAME, in two sign languages: French Belgian Sign Language (LSFB) and Catalan Sign Language (LSC). The intra- and inter-linguistic differences and similarities of the three discourse markers are examined at the level of their distribution per genre and per signer, their functions and their position in discourse. For this purpose, this paper also presents a segmentation methodology based on syntax and prosody.

Why is it important?
This study is the first one to tackle discourse markers from a cross-linguistic perspective in sign languages. Besides the fine-grained description of the three discourse under scrutiny, this paper shows that the properties of discourse markers are modality independent.
Perspectives
I hope that this article paves the way for other studies on discourse markers in sign languages to be developed.
