Why is it important?
This paper adds to our knowledge on the origins and structures of Afro-Yungueño Spanish and suggests that it is related to other Portuguese-derived contact languages. This is important for the debates on the scarcity of Spanish-derived contact languages as it supports the claim that a Portuguese-derived slave trade pidgin may have existed, which may have influenced a number of Atlantic contact languages.
Perspectives
This article is relevant since it introduces new data on the Afro-Bolivian community and its language that were gathered over several years and in collaboration with community members. This means that the argument is based on a profound ethnographic knowledge of the community, and the linguistic data are likely to represent more basilectal vernacular forms.
