What is it about?

Drawing on the psychological, sociological and historical background knowledge of the reading activity, the article is a summary of a PhD thesis which analyses translations carried out by the author or by students. It outlines the main features and functions of reading in the translation process and relates them to the literature on reading.

Why is it important?

Little attention has been paid to reading as such in translation studies over the past decades, yet it is a major skill of the overall translation competence. It was necessary to consider reading as a multi-faceted skill and competence and display all the stages of the translation process which make use of it, be it deciphering, analysing or proofreading and editing.

Perspectives

Trying to summarise and highlight the main features of a research was useful.
