What is it about?

This article addresses the contribution of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to translation and, specifically, the use of Halliday’s metafunctions in translation studies research. We hereby provide the state of the art of the role of metafunctions in translation and translation teaching by presenting the review of six studies. Our review illustrates the relevance of the incorporation of semantic metafunctions in translator training and evaluation, as well as the possibility of a distinction between obligatory and optional metafunctional translation shifts.

Why is it important?

Halliday's metafunctions are types of meaning that should be transferred in translation. However, the teacher/researcher who wishes to focus on the impact of metafunctions in translation is overwhelmed by a great variety of studies on LSF, which form a heterogeneous whole. We provide a review that is specifically oriented towards the use of the concept of metafunctions in translation with the emphasis put on teaching and evaluation. Therefore, our findings and conclusions can be directly implemented in translators' training.
