What is it about?
Human fertility, gender ratio and stillbirths all show on/off switching over time in response to a presumed infectious outbreak. The common herpes virus, cytomegalovirus, is probably involved via immune manipulation.

Why is it important?
These outbreaks also lead to changes in congenital abnormalities and are associated with increased admissions and deaths in the elderly, presumably via the same immune manipulation.
Perspectives
These outbreaks have a profound effect upon human health and in England alone create around £1billion of unanticipated costs. See http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf for a full series.
