What is it about?

This paper presents a simple method for calculating the number of hospital beds required on each day of the year and a minimum cost method for staffing these beds.

Why is it important?

Current methods to calculate hospital bed numbers are inadequate and tend to give the impression that fewer beds are required.

Perspectives

The Department of Health in England has omitted to inform the health services regarding how to calculate the real bed requirement. This was largely due to reliance on the Private Finance Initiative. As a result bed occupancy in English hospitals is almost at 'Banana Republic' levels. Part of a wider series on hospital bed numbers, see: http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
