What is it about?

Positive behaviour support (PBS) is a proactive approach to understanding and preventing challenging behaviour. This study interviewed 12 autism specialists at the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders about how PBS is currently used with autistic children in Saudi Arabia and what they expect from it.

Why is it important?

Specialists were applying PBS principles without formal knowledge of the approach. They stressed proactive measures, individualised interventions and collaboration between families and professionals. The study calls for better training, greater awareness of PBS among families and centre directors, and more research to support its use with autistic children in the region.

Perspectives

Positive behaviour support offers a respectful, proactive way to help autistic children. I hope this study encourages centres in Saudi Arabia to build formal training in PBS and to involve families more closely.
