What is it about?

I analyzed occurrences of the English noun *calmness* in Early Modern texts and online texts. I also analysed some other data from linguistic corpora to see what *calmness* meant in these two periods. I was interested in what kind of people or what else were calm, how it could be recognized and how people attained such a state. A comparison of data from the two periods shows both overlaps and differences.

Why is it important?

Although we do not necessarily always speak about these things exactly in terms of the noun *calmness*, it tends to be important for us to be in control and to appear calm. It is also important more generally for societies that people go about their daily business relatively calmly.

Perspectives

I originally wrote this piece of research several years ago, in Finnish. I was sad that I was not able to publish it then, but now it is likely to reach a wider audience, which is good. I would of course like to collect even more recent data to update my study.
