What is it about?
The book chapter summarizes the method and approach for the estimation of total gaseous Hg emissions from local prescribed burnings in Japan. The study is in progress, but it reports the overview of the emission using results from a case study.

Why is it important?
The article provides the overview of the series of studies for the estimation of Hg emission using a case study.
Perspectives
This is our first article demonstrating the overview of our approach. The approach has been tested by other scientists overseas, but it has not been applied to the Japanese biomass burning studies because forest fires are rare in Japan and the biomass burning emissions have ever been treated insignificant. The local event of prescribed biomass burning takes place once in a year, thus, the extent of each emission may not be very large. But more importantly, its significance has not ever been evaluated.
