What is it about?
Family structures are more diverse than ever, including immigrant families, single-parent households, adoptive and blended families, families with stay-at-home fathers or young parents, and grandparents raising grandchildren. This chapter focuses on collaboration with diverse families as a pillar of children's education. Its first part discusses how the concept of family has evolved and the traits that have remained, such as appreciation, commitment, values, coping skills and effective communication.

Why is it important?
Educators and administrators who know how to work with diverse families can contribute to their students' success. The second part of the chapter presents practical strategies for collaborating with families at school level and in the classroom, and includes surveys and questionnaires that schools can use to assess families' needs, create an inclusive setting and improve parental involvement.
Perspectives
This chapter, written with Juana Reyes, reflects my interest in the role families play in the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
