What is it about?

This study examined housing and hospitality (residential care) services for people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder in Saudi Arabia, from the point of view of their families and caregivers. It combined a questionnaire with follow-up interviews.

Why is it important?

Families noted positive changes such as weekly reports and nutrition programmes, but also concerns about residents' progress, the types of intervention offered and dissatisfaction among residents. The study recommends providing the right tools and resources for each disability group and intensive training for caregivers to improve the quality of care.

Perspectives

Families' views are essential for judging the quality of residential care. I hope this study helps providers in Saudi Arabia improve the resources and training needed to offer high-quality care to people with intellectual disabilities and autism.
