What is it about?

This paper is about using a digital educational escape room (DEER) for teaching students in a hybrid mode. A hybrid mode means that some students attend the class in person and some students follow the class online. The paper wants to see if the DEER can help the students learn new concepts by themselves, without the teacher's explanation. The paper describes an experiment that was done with 56 students who were taking a course on Introduction to Business. The paper chose a specific topic from the course, which was the market-to-book ratio. This is a measure that shows how much a company is worth compared to its book value. The paper divided the students into two groups: a control group and an experimental group. The control group followed a traditional lecture method, where the teacher explained the topic in the classroom. The experimental group used the DEER, which was a digital game that challenged the students to solve puzzles and tasks related to the topic. The DEER was embedded in the online platform of the course, and the students could access it from their homes. The paper gave the same test to both groups before and after the lecture or the DEER. The test had eight questions that measured different levels of difficulty and skills. The paper wanted to compare the scores of the two groups and see if there were any significant differences. The paper found that there were no significant differences in the scores of the two groups. This means that the DEER was as effective as the lecture for teaching the students the new concepts. The paper also found that most of the students showed evidence of learning in the questions that evaluated the specific skills for the course. The paper concluded that the DEER was a valid technique for teaching in general, and that it could be applied to other subjects and topics.

Why is it important?

This is the result of several previous researches on escape room by the researchers, where the design applied in previous educational strategies at university has been improved.
