What is it about?
We explore how new smart technologies can be used by local governments to manage and shape cities with a focus on preserving heritage. Our novel concept, Smart Heritage, combines smart city initiatives with heritage conservation efforts. Based on interviews with smart city and heritage advisors from Australian local councils, our study identifies opportunities for using smart technologies to enhance economic development, place-making, and governance in cities. It also provides recommendations to integrate these technologies into the regulatory functions of local governments, ultimately aiming to expand the practical and political scope of smart cities while integrating heritage preservation into urban policies.

Ultimately, the research has the potential to inform policy development and practical implementation strategies for local governments as they navigate the intersection of technology, urban planning, and heritage preservation.

Our research sheds light on the intersection of smart technologies, heritage preservation, and local government management, offering valuable insights and recommendations.
