What is it about?

We bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and empirical studies on how the visual aspects of spaces can influence people's emotions. Our interdisciplinary exploration at the intersection of architecture, psychology, and neuroscience provides practical guidelines for designers to evoke specific emotions intentionally through spatial design. We employed a systematic review of recent research at this intersection to understand the impact of visual stimuli on emotions. Additionally, we examine how physiological responses and human movement in physical or virtual environments are linked to emotional experiences. Finally, we established a stronger theoretical framework and rigorous methodology for studying the relationship between spatial design and human emotions.

Perspectives

We explored how moving through physical and virtual spaces influences people's emotions and neurophysiological responses. By conducting a systematic literature review, we have uncovered insights and implications for architectural and design practices.
