What is it about?

Using IDG and Sustainable Career Ecosystems Theory, this paper defines five cognitive skills—critical thinking, complexity awareness, perspective-taking, sense-making, long-term visioning—and outlines eight strategies to embed them as the part of Inner Development Goals in university curricula.

Why is it important?

By equipping students with five core cognitive capacities—rooted in the Inner Development Goals and Sustainable Career Ecosystems Theory—this work arrives at a critical juncture. As universities grapple with how to prepare graduates for intertwined environmental, social and economic crises, it offers a timely, evidence-backed roadmap for translating abstract sustainability ideals into concrete teaching practices that build the mental agility needed to drive real-world change.

Perspectives

From my vantage point as an educator committed to Higher Education, this publication resonates deeply: it translates lofty sustainability ambitions into tangible pedagogical practices by pinpointing the exact thinking skills students must master. I appreciate how the integration of IDG and SCET not only provides conceptual clarity but also offers a pragmatic blueprint—complete with concrete strategies and assessment ideas—for embedding cognitive growth into every layer of the curriculum. While implementation will demand institutional buy-in and faculty training, I’m inspired by the paper’s balanced blend of theory and action. It gives me both the language to advocate for “inner” development in departmental discussions and the confidence to pilot new, reflective learning modules that nurture the mental agility our graduates need to become true agents of change.
