What is it about?

We studied the assemblage of planktonic Foraminifera over several decades. We were able to find a seasonality pattern in their assemblage, but also a long-term trend toward a change in the specific composition.

Why is it important?

The observed long-term trend in the planktonic foraminiferal community can be linked to the warming of the Caribbean waters and the reduced strength of the North Atlantic Current. It can thus be directly linked to climate change.

Perspectives

Planktonic Foraminifera, which are important for the marine carbon- and caronate-pump, are vulnerable to the predicted climate change scenarios.
