What is it about?

Dental implants are fast becoming the mainstay of tooth rehabilitation . These implants simulate teeth only when the gums around them remain in a state of health. This article discusses the myriad techniques that can amplify the 'pink' esthetics.

Why is it important?

The success of dental implants depends upon not only sound bone but also healthy gums forming a cuff around the neck of the implant. In cases where the pink collar of gums becomes inadequate, the techniques described in this article can be planned to augment them.

Perspectives

The uniqueness of a dental implant lies in the fact that it is a bio compatible foreign body inserted in the bone and unlike other implants e.g., hip or knee implants, is exposed to the oral environment whereas others remain buried in bone. This dynamic environment is hazardous to the survival of the implant as it becomes easier for microorganisms to colonize the surface, resulting in hard and soft tissue loss. Surgically, areas deficient of gums can be plumped up to gain esthetics.
