What is it about?
The United States and Japan have developed thier ties not only in business but also in security areas. Those countries have gradually nurtured a sense of belonging to their ownn community where democracy, the rule of law, liberalism, and markete economy are regarded as their shared basic values. This has led to thier "collective identity" in this transpacific relationships.

Why is it important?
There has been no study on collective identity of the United States and Japan in security stuides. The past studies have heavily concentrated on thier economic ties such as trade, foregin direct investments, and finance Even in security study area, thier bilateral "institutional" arrangements on US military forward deployments in Japan have been dominat study. This study shed lights on how policy makers of the United States and Japan have "interacted" and nurtured thier sense of "we-ness" through national crisises such as the Persian Gulf War (1991), the September 11 terrorist attacs (2001), and the Tohoku Earthquake (2011).
Perspectives
I hope many people gain new perspective on US-Japan relationships deeper than simply looking at thier business ties for profits or military alliance against common foes.
