Why is it important?

The public narrative of the civil rights movement continues to put MLK at the centre and to reduce him largely to the I Have a Dream speech. This book enables the reader to see beyond this position and recognize the strength and weaknesses of King's leadership. It also encourages closer attention to the later phase of his career which is arguably when his efforts against militarism, materialism and racism speak most directly to the evils of our own time.

Perspectives

I wrote this on the basis of teaching the civil rights movement for nearly thirty years. It is an excellent introduction and has plenty of features to help students find the relevant sections so it is classroom friendly!
