What is it about?

This book is about how films from Asia have a different look to Western (and Hollywood) films. Using illustrated examples (film screenshots), it shows how cultures and traditions influence filmmakers and the way their films look.

Why is it important?

The West now has more access to films from Asia than ever before (especially through streaming services), so it is important to know why a film looks like it does. This helps to increase our cultural (and political) understanding of the many different nations of Asia.

Perspectives

This book includes comparisons between films and directors styles, within and beyond Asia. Hollywood remakes and co-productions often draw on the styles and techniques from Asia, so I feel it is important to show how and why this is done.
