What is it about?
As a major modernist writer who spent the first part of his career at sea, Joseph Conrad can help us navigate the unpredictable currents--typhoons, storms, and catastrophic disturbances of the atmosphere--that now haunt the epoch of the Anthropocene.

Why is it important?
Literature in general and a writer like Joseph Conrad in particular uses the microcosm of the ship understood as a "small planet" in order to reflect on the contagious nonhuman forces that have agentic, contagious, and in this sense mimetic powers to influence human behavior. He thus offers important steps to face unpredictable forces (winds, storms, currents) that are now changing our planet as well.
