Why is it important?
History has shown that Western media have a tendency to use stereotypes when reporting on Africa. This research is important to understand whether there have been continuities or change in reporting on the African story.
Perspectives
I am very passionate about news media and how they narrate the African stories and experiences. BBC has a long history in Africa and is arguably the dominant western media on the continent. Against the background of a history of negative reporting on Africa by the western media, it was interesting to learn from the research, how BBC Focus on Africa has adopted new approaches. The new approaches are more aligned to constructive journalism which focuses on giving context to stories and exploring solutions.
