Othering Hope

What is it about?

With the advent of postmodernity, our hopes are no longer necessarily vested in our own human projects of progressive mastery of the world. The modern expectation of steady progress without limit enters into crisis. Concerning hope, we can rejoin hands with certain pre-modern and extra-Occidental perspectives. Current philosophical reflection on hope under the banner of “apophasis” conjugates the Christian tradition of mystical apophatic theology (epitomized by Dionysius the Areopagite) with radical postmodern deconstruction (spearheaded by Jacques Derrida) in working out an approach to hope taking full account of our contemporary secular, multicultural society. 1
