What is it about?
This research shows how artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the hotel industry in two main ways: Service Robots and Automation: Hotels are increasingly using AI-powered robots and automated systems (RAISA - Robots, AI, and Service Automation) to improve guest experiences and reduce costs. These include: - Chatbots that provide 24/7 customer service on hotel websites - Check-in/check-out robots that reduce queuing times - Concierge robots that answer guest questions and provide local recommendations - Room service robots that deliver items to guests - Cleaning and maintenance robots The research shows that guests generally have positive reactions to these AI services, finding them entertaining and convenient. Hotels benefit from reduced labour costs and improved efficiency. Revenue Management Systems: AI is also transforming how hotels set prices and manage bookings through intelligent revenue management systems (RMS). These systems: - Analyse big data in real-time to optimise room pricing - Predict demand patterns more accurately than traditional methods - Forecast cancellations with up to 98% accuracy - Help hotels maximise occupancy rates and revenue Challenges and Solutions: Whilst AI offers many benefits, the research identifies key challenges: - Technical failures can frustrate guests - Employees may feel threatened by job displacement - AI systems lack the "warmth" of human interaction This research recommends using humanoid robots for better guest relations and training employees to work alongside AI rather than being replaced by it (i.e. human-robot collaboration). Such transformation requires long-term investments in AI-powered innovations and needs to be done in accordance with the overall hotel strategy, taking into consideration any proposed changes to the brand image. Investing in AI innovations reshapes hotels' strategies and brand image, and helps hoteliers develop a sustainable competitive advantage that allows hotels to expand and grow globally. Real-World Impact: The Case of Hotel Pez Espada by Medplaya in Spain shows concrete results after implementing AI revenue management: 15% increase in room revenue, 11% boost in occupancy rates, and 15% increase in revenue per available room (RevPAR).

Why is it important?
This research is crucial because it demonstrates how AI is becoming essential for hotel competitiveness and survival, especially after events like COVID-19 that increased demand for contactless services. The hotel industry contributes significantly to economic growth worldwide, and AI adoption helps hotels: - Improve efficiency and profitability by reducing labour costs and optimising pricing strategies - Enhance guest satisfaction through 24/7 service availability and personalised experiences - Make better business decisions with accurate demand forecasting and data analytics - Remain competitive in an increasingly digital marketplace The research provides practical guidance for hotel managers on how to successfully implement AI technologies whilst addressing potential challenges. As labour shortages and rising operational costs continue to pressure the industry, AI offers a sustainable solution for maintaining service quality whilst improving financial performance.
