What is it about?
This essay outlines how to improve sustainability both as a topic and as a practice in university-level German language courses. It includes case studies from German language courses taught at Texas Tech University on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year level. These courses were building on Critical Content-Based Instruction (CCBI) and Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) to achieve this goal.

Why is it important?
In addition to focusing on language proficiency, it is important to train students in additional, transferable skills to increase their job readiness and to equip them with the language and critical thinking tools to have a positive impact on their community and work towards a more sustainable world. This empowers students and makes language courses more relevant - an important aspect in a world where we have a lot of digital tools that claim they can teach a foreign language for free, yet they neglect these transferable skills.
