What is it about?

In times of unrest, higher education has turned to the Ombuds to minimize conflict on campus. However, the Ombuds can only be as strong as the policies in place to help them function. The success of the ombuds relies on the structure of the college.

Why is it important?

Simply having an ombuds available is not enough. Colleges and universities need to have policies in place to prohibit bullying so the ombuds can use such policies to come to a viable solution. Without leadership support and policies, ombuds may not be as effective.

Perspectives

This is important for leadership to know that simply dropping ombuds into an environment is not enough. The institution needs to have the policies and also leadership needs to be open to ombuds report. In short, ombuds do not operate in a vaccuum.
