This paper presents data from a multi-year mixed methods project on rural hometown investing in the Philippines —seeking to determine if migrants or the diaspora will park their money back home.

Why is it important?

The potentials of foreign remittances for development and for the betterment of migrant families have always been there. Knowing their financial knowledge, financial inclusion and financial practices will help us understand if these moneyed families have expanded or wasted their resources.

Perspectives

The heart of migration and development is found in the migrant household. Remittances help stir families' desires to improve economically. Lessons from this Chapter may enlighten us on how financial knowledge and improved financial capabilities by migrant families become important tools for development.
