What is it about?
Community-based tourism emerged in the 1970s as a locally driven response to the negative effects of international mass tourism (Cater, 1993; De Kadt, 1979; Hall and Lew, 2009; Murphy, 1985; Petricand Pivcevic, 2016; Smith, 1977; Turner and Ash, 1975).Community-based tourism can contribute positively to hosting societies in many different ways.

Why is it important?
It is an alternative to diversify the local economy, traditionally rooted in agriculture, farming and fishing (Lepp, 2007; López-Guzmán, Sánchez-Cañizares and Pavón, 2011; Maldonado, 2007; Tehand Cabanban, 2007. In addition, it provides visitors with greater environmentaland cultural awareness (Shrestha, Steinand Clark, 2007).
Perspectives
Furthermore, community-based tourism contributes to the conservation of cultural and natural resources. It also helps building job opportunities and reduce poverty of the communities involved (Amir et al, 2015) with a relatively little level of investment (Lindberg, Enriquez and Sproule, 1996). As a result of these positive impacts, community-based tourism has become an important tool to achieve sustainable development (Sebele, 2010).
