Why is it important?

Changes toward increased domination from mainland China's political and economic strengths have been seen as reducing the impact of HK films. This chapter shows how HK film reflects versatility as a form of crossover cinema that manages to represent HK and mainland cultures.

Perspectives

Since 1996 Hong Kong has moved closer toward the eventual assimilation with mainland China. Films made since that time have reflected both anxieties toward the shift, as well as commonalities in traditions and cultures.
