What is it about?
Norovirus is the number one cause of gastrointestinal diseases in humans worldwide, enters the environmental water through sewage discharge, and contaminates drinking water and fresh produce (e.g., through irrigation practices). It is crucial to control the spread of human norovirus in the environment by implementing effective mitigation strategies. Chitosan, as an environmentally friendly biopolymer, delivers a strong antimicrobial property. We have shown that chitosan in the form of microparticles can moderately bind to norovirus particles and remove them from water, showing potential for decontamination of water from enteric viruses.
