What is it about?
Sporeforming bacteria are a source of spoilage in many food products. We have shown that agar-agar powders used in many microbiological media preparations can be contaminated with thermophilic sporeformers capable of growth in the media after standard autoclave sterilization. A longer autoclave duration was shown to eliminate the growth of these sporeformers. This work highlights the importance of media controls in microbiological testing of food products.
