What is it about?

Enterobacteria are common in fruits and vegetables. they might be pathogens, opportunistic pathogens, commensals or may carry various antibiotic resistance genes and other virulence genes. as fresh fruits and vegetables mostly eaten raw, the antibiotic-resistant bacteria may gain access to the human body and establish infection or transfer their antibiotic-resistant genes to other resident bacteria and may cause infections some years later after ingestion of the contaminated food. antibiotic-resistant bacteria are difficult to be treated and thus monitory if our food contains them is very important for their control.

Why is it important?

fresh produce contain antibiotic-resistant bacteria and thus we need better decontamination methods. AmpC B-lactamse is an important resistant mechanism in bacteria and makes the bacteria that posses them to be super bugs. A more potent type which is an inducible AmpC B lactamase was demonstrated in this study in some bacteria isolated from fresh produce at market place.

Perspectives

this publication the first to detect an inducible type Amp C B-lactamase in bacteria isolated from fresh produce that are mostly eaten raw. the study also highlights the importance of monitoring contamination of fresh produce with antibiotic-resistant bacteria served to immunocompromized individuals in hospitals or community.
