What is it about?
CMV is an immune modifying virus which acts at sub-acute level to modify human immune responses. It exerts these effects even when seemingly dormant. Certain members of the population (with particular gene mutations???) seem more sensitive to these passive effects. Persons who are not infected with CMV tend to have a longer life span.

Why is it important?
International outbreaks of a mystery agent seem to be causing shifts in population health and increased deaths. Is it possible that CMV is the cause for these mystery shifts in medical admissions and deaths?
Perspectives
The official medical view is that CMV is largely harmless except in the immune compromised (HIV/AIDS, immuno-suppression in cancer and inflammatory diseases, etc). However, there are increasing case reports of severe CMV infection in the seemingly immuno-competent population. Such case reports seem to peak in the years when outbreaks of the mystery agent occur.
