What is it about?

Outbreaks of a novel agent lead to periods of higher death and hospital admission. Given the range of conditions which are affected during these outbreaks, the possibility that the common herpes virus Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is involved is investigated. CMV has a huge repertoire of immune subversive strategies and works in cooperation with other pathogens.

Why is it important?

Most medical textbooks describe CMV as being a relatively benign pathogen. Responsible for 40% of congenital malformations and a host of sub-clinical manipulations this virus is hardly benign.
