What is it about?

Friction and wear of nitrocarburised surfaces can vary significantly depending on the applied processing parameters which result in different hardness, compound layer thickness (and composition) and surface roughness/topography. In this study, steel samples were plasma nitrocarburised at four different processing parameters and compared in view of their tribological behaviour.

Why is it important?

This study showed that the selection of appropriate processing parameters can drastically change the tribological performance of plasma nitrocarburized samples under non-lubricated sliding conditions and can provide a reduction of the wear depth of up to 80%.

Perspectives

Nitrocarburising is a very effective surface treatment technique for enhancement of corrosion, friction and wear properties which is often overlooked due to lack of understanding of their tribological behaviour and optimisation possibilities. Hopefully, this article will be helpful in adjusting the properties of nitrocarbuirised surfaces for tribological applications and will encourage further research in this regard.
