What is it about?

This paper is about an analysis of discussions on the social media service Twitter tagged with #TECHtalkGA. The hashtag #TECHtalkGA is used by some educators in the U.S. state of Georgia to discuss aspects of technology in schools on Twitter. Digital methods were applied to over 5000 tweets contributed over the course of months. The participants utilized the chat for discussing organization, planning, and classroom technologies, often about a specific hardware and software platform. Why is it important?

It is important to know about the tools teachers use to organize their professional learning networks. It also is important to know what teachers are discussing in these networks so that researchers can consider how to reach teachers and to understand the type of language the teachers are using. Also, the analysis methods utilized in this chapter to work through over 5000 tweets may be of interest to others conducting social media research.

Perspectives

It was interesting to see how the educators participating in this chat were often concerned with a specific vendor's hardware and software, and how the discussion was often less about student learning through creative uses of technology than the researchers had hoped.
