What is it about?

English language programmes depend on effective assessment of students' proficiency for placement, progression and completion, and teachers and administrators often have to meet institutional accountability and accreditation requirements. This edited book explores approaches, models, principles and techniques for effective assessment at classroom and programme level, including language programme evaluation, curriculum alignment and alternative assessment methods.

Why is it important?

Appropriate and accurate assessment gives teachers and administrators an opportunity to review current practices, introduce reforms and improve student learning through curricular change, teacher training and changes in classroom practice. The book is intended for classroom teachers, administrators, researchers and students.

Perspectives

Editing this book with Amanda Lira Gordenstein Montes allowed us to bring together perspectives on English language assessment from many different contexts. Assessment has been at the centre of my work throughout my career.
