What is it about?

The popularity of mobile computing is irrefutable, with the allure of mobile games reaching epic proportions. This massive appeal, along with the anytime-, anywhere-, and on-any-device characteristics of mobile computing has contributed to growing interest in the educational importance of mobile games, exemplified by the growing number of articles on the subject. This chapter expands upon what is known about mobile game-based learning (mGBL); offering a review of the research, while citing mobile games that have been used to promote learning.

Why is it important?

Mobile technology offers new opportunities that are free from space and time restrictions. Digital content can be imbedded with the real world creating an augmented reality that blurs the boundaries between virtual and real, resulting in a blended experience. This mixed reality lets students experience real life while interacting with virtual objects, taking learning out of the classroom. Consequently, mobile games have the potential of bridging the gap between school and the real world by placing students in authentic places and learning situations. Altogether, contributing to what is mounting research on mGBL. This chapter defines mGBL, reviews the educational benefits of mobile games, and compiles a list of games used in the context of learning.

Perspectives

Even though research to date has largely highlighted the location-based features of mobile devices, emerging study on mGBL is promising, suggesting that learning can take place through these games.
