What is it about?

We demonstrated that lower vitamin D status (vitamin D insufficiency) was associated with an increased risk of subsequent spontaneous abortion in early pregnancy.

Why is it important?

Sponaneous abortion is a frequent complication to pregnancy. This is the first larger study on the association to vitamin D status. The risk of spontaneous abortion was increased by 250%, if the women had vitamin D insufficiency (s-25OHD below 20 mg/mL or 50 nmol/L), which is very frequent in pregnancy worldwide. Our study brings the hope that some of the many spontaneous abortions can be prevented by vitamin D.

Perspectives

If our findings are supported by others, a new and cheap prevention against spontaneous abortion is identified. Further studies should test not only the effect of improved vitamin D status in early pregnancy, but also before pregnancy, as very early spontaneous abortions are the most frequent.
