What is it about?

In this study, we compared two sampling processes to examine mycotoxin contamination in maize and wheat. Both sampling processes used a pneumatic probe to collect five samples from the full depth of the silo. In one process (A), this sample was subdivided (upper third, middle third and lower third), whereas the full depth sample was used for the second process (B).

Why is it important?

Mycotoxin contamination of stored grains can occur in a highly heterogeneous manner, presenting challenges for obtaining accurate estimates of contamination levels. Limited information is available regarding sampling of grains stored in silos for mycotoxin analysis.

Perspectives

To our knowledge, this is the first research to examine mycotoxin contamination in samples collected from silos using a pneumatic probe. Our results provide a solution to the problems associated with grain sampling in static storage in silos. We believe that our findings will be of particular interest to researchers working to address regulatory issues and develop methods for accurate sampling and testing of mycotoxins.
