What is it about?

In July 2020, Eberhard Schockenhoff passed away after a tragic accident. In part, this paper is biographical, showing motives of Schockenhoff's life history which influenced his ethical and theological thinking, in part it accentuates major topics of his work and finally his self-understanding of what Schockenhoff himself his publications are actually good for - i.e. to serve the future of Christian faith and Church, even in times of contestation.

Why is it important?

The paper provides a short and focused overview of the life and rich ethical legacy of Eberhard Schockenhoff, hoping to serve and honor his memory.

Perspectives

As I have known Eberhard Schockenhoff for decades both as doctoral student and later as colleague at the Faculty of Theology in Freiburg University, I offer a subjective and yet well informed short account and interpretation on what was important to him as scholar, theologian and Catholic priest in connection with his deep humanity.
