What is it about?

This research introduces a novel approach to cybersecurity education: "Small Provoking Games" (SPGs). Forget lectures and exams! SPGs are short, metaphor-driven games designed to challenge players' assumptions and trigger critical reflection on their cybersecurity practices. What makes them unique? Discomfort by Design: Unlike traditional games, SPGs don't hold your hand. They embrace confusion and failure to force players to question their existing understanding of cybersecurity. Metaphorical Magic: By translating complex concepts into playful metaphors, SPGs make cybersecurity relatable and engaging, even for beginners. Beyond the Game: SPGs are just the first step. Post-game discussions and activities help players connect the game's experiences to their real-world practices, fostering lasting change.

Why is it important?

Designing games for behavioural change is really hard! Taking a provocative approach helps to: Spark Inquiry: Move players beyond rote memorization towards actively questioning and analysing cybersecurity concepts. Empower Co-design: Prepare players to actively participate in designing future cybersecurity solutions. While a formal evaluation is ongoing, initial results are promising. SPGs show potential to be a valuable tool for promoting deeper understanding and more secure coding practices.
