What is it about?

This study investigates the phytochemical composition and biological properties of leaf extracts from two Moroccan Cistus species—Cistus laurifolius L. and Cistus salviifolius L.—to evaluate their potential as natural coadjuvants for mild acne vulgaris. Using HPLC‑DAD and HPLC‑ESI/MS analyses, the extracts were shown to contain abundant polyphenols, especially flavonoids and tannins. Their antioxidant capacity was assessed through multiple in vitro chemical and cell‑based assays, while antimicrobial activity was tested against Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative bacteria, as well as Candida albicans. Both extracts demonstrated anti‑inflammatory and antibacterial properties, with notable activity against Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes—the principal bacteria associated with acne.

Why is it important?

Acne vulgaris is commonly treated with topical or systemic therapies that may cause side effects, contribute to antimicrobial resistance or fail to address underlying oxidative and inflammatory processes. Plant‑derived polyphenols offer a potential complementary approach with a broader biological profile. The results of this study show that Cistus extracts possess relevant antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory and antibacterial activities, indicating that these traditional Moroccan remedies could support or enhance conventional acne treatments. Their effectiveness against acne‑related pathogens makes them particularly attractive candidates for developing mild, natural formulations.

Perspectives

These findings suggest that Cistus laurifolius and Cistus salviifolius extracts could be further explored as natural coadjuvants for managing mild acne. Future work should focus on in vivo studies to confirm their efficacy and safety, clarify active constituents and optimize extraction strategies for standardized formulations. Research into topical delivery systems, stability and potential synergistic interactions among extract components may support their development into practical dermatological products.
