What is it about?
Cataracts are the most common cause of blindness world wide. Cataracts are opacities (areas of cloudiness) within the eye lens that prevent normal transmission of light to the retina. We provide a new hypothesis (based on recent studies from our laboratory and others) for how they form.

Why is it important?
This paper suggests a novel process for the formation of cataracts: precipitation of calcium salts and biomineralization.
Perspectives
These recent studies suggest that the formation of cataracts is not simply due to the accumulation of damage to lens proteins. Rather, it may involve biomineralization, a process related to the formation of kidney stones or bone.
