What is it about?
The study compares the expressed demand for occupied hospital beds and the average bed occupancy in different countries. The age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) is also used to estimate the additional hospital bed required in more deprived areas.

Why is it important?
This is the first time such a comparison has been possible on a like-for-like basis. It establishes that the common misconception that the National Health Service (NHS) in England is inefficient is a political obfuscation concealing the damaging effect of low investment.
