What is it about?
Fully flexible valve trains add a multitude of possibilities to enhance the performance of internal combustion engines - increase of power, increase of torque, reduction of pollutants, increase of efficiency and so on. Here, we discuss the possibility to increase efficiency by adequately setting lift and closing of the intake valves of a spark ignition engine.

Why is it important?
Literature often reports that early closing of intake valves leads to a dissipation of in-cylinder turbulence and hence to a reduction of the burning velocity - which leads t a reduction of engine efficiency for spark ignited engines. We systematically analyzed this using a fully flexible valve train and found, that the burning velocity is reduced slightly but the overall effects (taking reduction of throttling losses into account) is still very beneficial.
